I’m not going to hold you… THIS SHIT IS DOPE.
But if you’d like to stay for a bit, feel free to indulge.

Obviously… The Midnight Gospel is what many may consider to be a “stoner show”, but it is a beautifully layered presentation that goes deep into things that I believe most people would benefit from hearing. For me personally, it was right on time!
Before pressing play, I knew very little about this show aside from stumbling upon the fact that some of the people involved previously worked on the show Adventure Time. What I gathered after a few episodes is that it is basically a semi-autobiographical podcast interwoven with a sci-fi fantasy narrative that has colorfully twisted visuals placed on top. Then after a little post-binge investigation, I discovered that’s pretty much exactly what it is.
The Adventure Time animators fused their artistry with parts of interviews from The Duncan Trussell Family Hour, a podcast by the voice of the main character Duncan Trussell, and thus The Midnight Gospel was created.
It’s not some crazy concept. But the execution is done so well! The characters are depicted maneuvering fearlessly through these bizarre worlds and having beyond worldly conversations about things like meditation, death, drug use, and morality at such a calm and comforting tone. The animation telling one story and the dialogue telling another. It is easy to get caught up in either, but they’re still connected in some way. Total chaotic good.
It was exactly what I needed to hear during These Times™.
What absolutely sold me was the finale episode. It is so POWERFUL. So beautiful. There haven’t been too many other episodes of television that have filled me with such awe and emotion.
If you don’t really care about the narrative of the show and just wanna learn ya something, I highly recommend skipping straight to the last episode. It also discusses a great meditation technique that I will definitely be applying in my own life. But the show in its entirety is lovely, and I enjoyed it.
