Broad City: The Hiiighlights

on

Well, well, well. Welcome back! This has been a long time coming. I have neglected this site tremendously while trying to get my life together, like most 20-somethings are wont to do. Spoiler Alert: My life still isn’t “together”, but I am working to redirect my focus…

So what better way to return than with one of my most favorite television shows involving the kweens of 20-somethings, Broad City!

The fifth and final season of Broad City airs Thursday, January 24th on Comedy Central. Wah. But in honor of this pivotal moment in cable television history, I would like to highlight some key episodes in the show’s past four seasons.

Now, now… I will be the first to say that it isn’t really fair to single out episodes from Broad City because the series does not miss. All of the episodes are quality and contribute to the world of Broad City in their own ways, so I highly recommend you watch them all. BUT if you are short on time, here are the episodes that pop out in my mind when I think of BC. The tone-setters… the game changers… the mothaf***in’ hits!

Season One

P*$$y Weed (Episode 2)

  • The pilot episode hooks you, but “P*$$y Weed” makes you stay. It is so well put-together from beginning to end. I don’t think there is a dead moment in this one. A truly millennial episode about growth and taking care of business.

Fattest Asses (Episode 5)

  • This episode is important because it is our introduction to the Blue Dress. Everyone has that special piece of clothing that makes them feel like the shit no matter what. The Blue Dress is Abbi’s special piece, and we see it multiple times throughout the series, which is sooo real. We would all like the luxury of buying clothes to only wear them once, but let’s be honest, how realistic is that??? Student loans gotsta gets paid.

(RuPaul doesn’t show up until Season 4. Sorry.)

Apartment Hunters (Episode 9)

  • Even though the show had already been renewed for season two, the cold open for this episode helped solidify Broad City… Legendary. Also, Amy Sedaris is hilarious as the real estate agent and provides a number of quotables that I use in my every day life.

Season Two

Wisdom Teeth (Episode 3)

  • Bingo Bronson. 42 Squirts. Manuka Honey. Another flawless episode from top to bottom. Although Broad City usually deals in surreal-ish situations, I believe this is the first episode that truly takes it to a new level, which makes complete sense because Abbi is hiiiiiigh out of her mind. Augmented reality FTW.

Hashtag FOMO (Episode 5)

  • It was hard to choose between this, “Knockoffs” and “Kirk Steele”, but “Hashtag FOMO” is something we all feel. And a banging function is something many of us aspire to attend. Not only do we see a hidden side of Abbi, but we also get a second Garol cameo. She first appeared in “Working Girls” on season one and is a hidden treasure in the series.

Coat Check (Episode 9)

  • One of the best guest appearances of the series. Kelly Ripa KILLS! Plus, we meet Ilana’s doppelgänger, which always makes me ask the question “what would I do if I met myself?”. The answer is: I’d probably fall in love, too.

Season Three (DISCLAIMER: This season is a bit more episodic, so having the context of each episode in the season is more helpful. However, these can still be enjoyable.)

Two Chainz (Episode 1)

  • This one still draws audible chuckles out of me even after about a dozen views. It does not have the most ambitious plot, but Abbi and Ilana are still able to find themselves in a few great moments of situational catastrophe, which translates to humor for us. Plus, there are so many beautiful details in the opening scene that make a huge Broad City geek like myself very proud.

B&B NYC (Episode 7)

  • The gals list their places on an AirBnB type site and decide to “rough it” for the night while their apartments are occupied. I die every time I watch Ilana put the joint out during their rooftop camping stint. Some storylines that were seeded in previous episodes begin to develop a little more in this one aaaaaand BLAKE GRIFFIN guest stars (!!).

giphy-13

Burning Bridges (Episode 8)

  • Although this is one of the more brilliant and classic episodes in terms of comedy, “Burning Bridges” marks a turning point in the series for me as we get a peek into the girls’ more serious sides. The Blue Dress also makes an appearance.

Season Four – (DISCLAIMER: Initially, I wasn’t a big fan of this season because of the obvious tonal impact it had due to Tr*mp being elected. Now, it has grown on me a little. It is a bit darker, but there are still some bangers.)

Sliding Doors (Episode 1)

  • Here we see the origin story of Abbi and Ilana presented using two different outcomes: the happily-ever-after and the darkest timeline (S/o to Community). Only one can be the truth…

Mushrooms (Episode 4)

  • This episode deserved so many awards! It follows Abbi and Ilana on a mushroom trip using a great display of mixed media throughout. The animator does a very good job of taking you on the journey with the girls. This is probably the best episode of the season and definitely a top one in the series. Wanda Sykes is a special guest and ices the cake in maybe the funniest moment of the episode. Brilliant.

giphy-10

Florida (Episode 7)

  • The broads leave NYC for the balmy breeze and palmy trees of Florida. The sunshine and bright clothing are a welcomed relief from the gray and chilly New York atmosphere, and it is also a spark of life for viewers from an otherwise dark and heavy season. Abbi and Ilana contemplate moving away from the stress of the city to a retirement community in Florida, which eventually leads us to a montage involving a couple of incredible windbreaker suits and an emulation of Beyoncé‘s “Formation”. There is another great guest appearance with Fran Drescher being perfectly cast as Ilana’s aunt.
