In Heavy Rotation: 4/20/2016

Happy Broad City Season 3 Finale Day!

I’d like to share some songs that are in my current rotation and make me mash the repeat button excessively. I plan to make this a recurring thing because I’m always wanting to share what I’m listening to in larger portions than the duration of a Snapchat video.

Alright… First and most importantly, I have been in a serious Anderson .Paak phase for the last two months or so. Every bit of his discography. But for the sake of space and time, I will narrow it down to a couple tracks here:

“Might Be” – Anderson .Paak

I think some knock-off DJ remade this, but it doesn’t matter. Everyone knows that originals are usually better. This one definitely is. Press play and vibe.

“The Waters (feat. BJ the Chicago Kid)” – Anderson .Paak

“I can do anything but move backwards // The hardest thing is to keep from being distracted”.

Bars.

I highly suggest that you consume as much Anderson .Paak as possible! There is a wealth of quality music on his Soundcloud.

“Rush” – Starrah

Despite its soothing elements, this one makes me milly rock somethin’ vicious when it comes on. Starrah’s also on “Pass Dat” by Jeremih, which is flames.

“Bring Yo Friends” – Tunji Ige

Tunji Ige has a Soundcloud worth rummaging through as well. This track is from his latest release, Missed Calls, but he has some other nice singles, too. Check him out!

“Special Somebody (feat. Cassper Nyovest, Riky Rick & Anatii)” – DJ Speedsta

This one’s been in my personal rotation for awhile now, but it still bangs. I went through a phase last year where I was really interested in how hip-hop and rap sounded in Africa and other cool places. I should hop back on that…

Anyway, I stumbled upon this track, and it is delightful. I truly feel like this could be on the radio here in the States. Thoughts?

“Jordan Belfort” – Wes Walker & Dyl

Sometimes, you can’t help what you love.

I don’t know who these guys are talking about “flippin’ birds”, but this gives me fratty Bubba Sparxxx vibes. I feel it.

“Too Deep” – dvsn

If you were displeased with Zayn’s recent effort, dvsn could be your antidote. (His album, Sept. 5th, is what I thought Zayn’s album should’ve been like).

dvsn has the voice and the soul, plus he’s signed to Drake‘s OVO Sound team. Major.

This is a little bouncy, 90s-inspired joint that I can really get my lip-sync on to, so I rocks with it heavy. It’s also great for a shower playlist.

“Today” – Amer

One day when I was listening to “Too Deep” on Soundcloud, this song followed it and turned out to be quite a jam. Double W.

“Michael Jackson” – Nef the Pharaoh

All I see when I listen to this is two feet with sparkling white socks and black penny loafers on, gliding effortlessly on an ice-colored marble floor.

“My Uzi (feat. Big K.R.I.T.) – David Banner

I was reminded about this one recently because David Banner’s God Box album is dropping in May. The fire Pimp C sample comes from this old Banner song.

“Ain’t got no bodyguards // I just need mighty God”. Woo!

“What Are We Doing (feat. Ty Dolla $ign) – Race Banyon

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. Pretty much everything that Ty Dolla $ign has touched in the last 15 months has been absolute goodtness (yes, you read that right). He’s always been dope, but lately, he’s like the Midas of Melody.

This song is just a loosie single that bangs. Recommended listening environment: car.

Ty Dolla $ign’s Free TC album was so good, and the recently released bonus tracks (ex: “Like A Drug”) from the deluxe edition are groovy, too.

“2 Minute Warning (feat. K-Ci & JoJo and Detail)” – TWENTY88

Jhené Aiko and Big Sean did the Surprise Album Drop Method justice when they announced that they’d be releasing a joint project as TWENTY88. Sean did his thing, but I think Jhené really shined on the album. She flexed her vocals a little bit and had some grimy verses that are usually out of her contextual range.

This song sounds like what will happen when someone discovers a time capsule with a Jodeci album inside 72 years from now. Very appreciative of K-Ci & JoJo adding the 90s R&B touch. And that bass? Mon Dieu!

Please feel free to share whatever you are listening to with me as well. I wanna know!
